When you were good you were great, But when you were bad you were better. Just when you planned the return, I’d vanished again. I’d vanished again, vanished again, I’d vanished again. (Ooh!) If it was ever the same, Just take my hand, don’t dither. Don’t be afraid, the debt will be paid on time. I’ll pay you on time, pay you on time, I’ll pay you on time. What goes up surely comes down. I was so pushy, the thoughts of a clown. Slurry and stuttered, bloody and bruised again. You bruise you again, bruise me again, you bruise you again. It won’t remain all day. Sunshine will soon blow those clouds away. Down becomes high, but then you’ll deny me again, You’ll deny me again, deny me again, deny me again.

At the Edge 02:42
I tried to make my why, From the middle of the road Left behind and cast away, For a worn-out moral code. It’s a long way down, Back to my home town. At the edge, down look down to the daily round. At the edge, don’t look down to the daily round. I tried to be like you, In your silent empty space, But found a better view in this colder, clearer place. Don’t need to feel this way, it’s a pain that is sure to be left behind, Won’t ask you where its gone, I don’t need to see to know I’m blind. It’s a long way down, Back to my home town. At the edge, down look down to the daily round. At the edge, don’t look down to the daily round. When the day is done, please let me run, to the edge, I’m at the edge. At the edge, at the edge.

Big Issue 01:55
Old man, why are you waiting, or what are you waiting for? Back away from your road, I saw. Woman, sitting and selling your issues like before, Back away from your road. Look ahead, look away, or simply look around. You’ve got problems of your own. Look ahead, look angry, or simply move the clown, The broken bird won’t have flown. Count your pennies, count your blessings, And count your lucky stars. You’re so far apart. Count your pennies, count your blessings, And count your lucky stars. Three cheques away is not far. Look ahead, look away, or simply look around. You’ve got problems of your own. Look ahead, look angry, or simply move the clown, The broken bird won’t have flown. (Big Issue, Big Issue) Lookin’ at you, lookin’ at me, lookin’ at you, lookin’ at me (Big Issue) Lookin’ at you, lookin’ at me, lookin’ at you, lookin’ at me

Colours 02:09
She looked through her window at the lives passing by, Considered the how, who’s and why’s. Pour over the clues, the scars and the burns, Was her red always green, a straight or a turn? Which way to go, is what she didn’t know. Was the green a red, or a blue instead? One day it was he, a white hare moon, The lover enslaved by the light of her swoon. Red carried a warning, a shot from on high, Green carried the wings, she needed to fly. Which way to go, is what she didn’t know, Was the green a red or a blue instead? Its all make believe, and flowing like wine, His words did deceive, to tempt her decline. The colours she hears, and the feelings you see Were make believe, but believe you we need

Harvest Time 01:56
Oh! I’ve got new clothes, I wore them with pride. Forget all the warnings, you tried to bury and hide. With a used dollar bill, and some time to kill, We’re gonna relieve the harvest time. A time to reap, a time to sorrow, A time to learn, a time to know. With a used dollar bill, and some time to kill, We’re gonna relieve the harvest time. Harvest time. Harvest time. Harvest Time. Harvest Time. I’ve got new clothes, I wore them with pride. Forgot all the warnings, that you tried to bury and hide. With a dollar bill, and some time to kill, We’re gonna relieve the harvest time.

Hi! Flyers 02:00
HI! Flyers surround you, watching from below. They push their way to the front of the queue, They’ll be the first to go. Hi! Flyers stay focused, and portray eternal youth. Self-absorbed soliloquies in business cliches, All strangers to the truth. Come lets climb the greasy pole, Climb onboard the gravy train. Looking for the next big role, And someone else to take the blame. HI! Flyers surround you, see their highs and lows. They drive their way through heaven and earth, They’ll be the first to go. Come and stand upon the shoulders, Of the rest of humankind. Watching them as they all grow older, Bloodied, weary and resigned.

My oh My 01:57
Silence passes slowly by, so why aren’t you afraid? Highlight the dues that were never paid, And drop out of your victory parade. Now and then, forgive those who fell in their field of dreams. Now and then, it’s better to be who you want too. My oh! my, what a place to be. Simply sublime you’ll agree. My oh my, what a time to be free, And realize the plans we have made Time was long, So scared of the face in the nameless crowd, Then I was, forgetting that I could do something real.

The Light 01:36
Turn on the light today, it will be fine. Turn off the thoughts that should be mine. When you wake up in the morning light, Dreams of a past that has resigned. One day you’ll realize the dawn has been haunting you One day a blanket of forlorn will fall from clothing you. Rest with me awhile and reflect on what happened here, Then turn to walk but start to run. As fate and change will soon start to disappear, Your caressed defeat has not been won. One day you’ll realize the dawn has been haunting you One day a blanket of forlorn will fall from clothing you.

Just a girl, in a Chinese dress, This photograph cannot express, The love and pain, that day I came. A moment found and lost again. The river flows through lonely miles, washing the hurt for the water child The river flows through lonely miles, washing the hurt for the water child Just a boy, trying to forget, This photograph reminds him yet. The sacrifice, the bad advice, Forgotten life the bitter prize. The river flows through lonely miles, washing the hurt for the water child The river flows through lonely miles, washing the hurt for the water child The water child…………

Thin, tall, and gorgeous, That’s what I should’ve been. Wide and bald and wanting, that’s what the girls have seen. The girls never loved me, Though I tried to plant the seed, They just ignored me, in thought, word, and deed. Better move along now, time aint on my side no more, Gotta find a floozy who wont mind if I snore. Gotta find a princess who is more than well endowed, Gotta find a woman where my thoughts would be allowed.

You 01:38
You were a child, then I hesitated, Next to you. You were a child, but I kept on waiting, Here for you. Seasons change, Spring lifts up Summer, each day for you. When I was waiting, hesitating. You learn to keep waiting, there’s no hesitating, For you. You……

about

The beauty of digital recording software, rather than the ‘old days’ of tape, is that it enables the composer to include endless layers of sound ie not only many different instruments, but effects, tonality, processing, panning left or right etc.

So, with all these virtual riches at my actual fingertips, it was always difficult for me to stop layering! The was always something else to tinker with- and working solo meant I always agreed with myself, and there was no one to say stop.

So, one day, I set myself a challenge.

“Me,” I said to myself, as I was in fact, the me in question. “Will you accept a challenge?”
“Yes,” me said to me, and of course he would, as being me, he knew what I was thinking already.

ENOUGH ALREADY!

So, I set myself a challenge to write, record, and finish a song in one evening. Strip it down just to my Ukulele. Perhaps a little strum on a guitar if needed, and likewise a backing vocal, if it added to the song. If it didn’t- it was out!

The deadline was to be adhered to. So over 12 evenings, there came, you guessed it, 12 songs. But would this be of any interest to anyone? God Knows, but I’m still pleased as punch to be able to see my album up here, online. If you, dear listener, should like just one line of one song, that’s good enough for me.

Well, just one line won’t get you onto my Christmas card list, but thank you all the same. But if you like one entire song, or even two, then I may be onto something. And if 3, or 5, or ALL 12 SONGS are to your liking, then I am giving up the day job, changing my name, and moving to somewhere remote and sunny, and will spend the rest of my days composing Uke songs, just for you.

So here it is, done. Enjoy!

David

PS There is a theme to every song. In no particular order, they include, rejection, careerism, success, homeless, love, anger, more rejection, whimsical rejection, making choices, physical condition, egomaniacs, and finally, more rejection.

Hmmm… I sense a theme emerging!

So, if you can put the correct theme to the correct song, I’ll write the next one about you. If you don’t want me to, that’ll be another ditty about rejection then.
